Mazda’s Road to Carbon Neutrality

May 5th, 2023 by

Mazda is on the path to carbon neutrality! This means they plan to offset any emissions they create to reduce greenhouse gases. By 2030, the company strives to reduce corporate well-to-wheel C02 emissions to 50% compared to the levels shown in 2010. Well-to-wheel is an evaluation method that accounts for a fuel’s entire lifecycle, including producing, transporting, and distributing. Mazda plans to achieve carbon neutrality for the entire supply chain and the whole life cycle of each vehicle by 2050. But how does Mazda intend to achieve this lofty goal? The company is making many new changes in the coming years, and we at Luther Mazda of Lee’s Summit are here to explain its plans and objectives and how you can prepare for these changes as a Mazda driver!

Mazda believes that the love of driving and the love of our planet Earth MUST be harmonious, and to ensure this relationship lasts, it plans to make sure the lifecycle of its vehicles is environmentally friendly by introducing new technologies for manufacturing, usage, and recycling. Even the exterior’s design has carbon neutrality in mind. Mazda’s designers sculpt the vehicles to cut a clean path through the air to reduce drag so the engines don’t have to work nearly as hard, which reduces emissions. Mazda also pays attention to battery and hybrid cars, ensuring these vehicles use sustainable energy while not moving emissions to power stations. From 2025 to 2030, the company will release multiple electric cars, and by 2030, all Mazda vehicles will be electrified, including many electric-only models.

Mazda is looking into renewable energy to combat unsustainable emissions, most recently by installing a 1.1-megawatt solar array that powers the entire Hiroshima factory. Another tactic used at the plant is an Aqua-Tech paint system. This eco-friendly method reduces volatile organic compound emissions by 78% compared to oil-based paints while cutting carbon dioxide emissions down more than 15% with infra-red heating and energy-saving air conditioning to finish the paint.
